Planapalooza

Planapalooza™ was held August 20-25 in Rome!

Planapalooza™ was held August 20th-25th in Rome! This was provided as an opportunity for you to work directly with friends, family, neighbors, City staff and officials, and a team of talented planners to build a stronger future for the City of Rome and Floyd County. On the first evening of Planapalooza™, the team presented our opening presentation to answer questions and educate attendees on the process ahead.

The first two full days of Planapalooza™ featured topical Focus Meetings, where residents shared their hopes and concerns related to transportation, housing, community character, growth, development, conservation, parks and recreation, downtown, and learned how the code can address these. You can STILL add your ideas about these topics in the Focus Meeting forums below, and are able to watch the Zoom recording of each meeting below as well.  These meetings were held both in person and online via Zoom.

For the entirety of the Planapalooza™, the Team and participating City Staff worked in a temporary design studio at the Courtyard by Marriott Rome Riverwalk. Any citizen, business owner or official who wished to join in and provide comments, suggestions, or simply watch us work, was able to stop by at their own convenience or drop into the open studio Zoom.

On the final evening of Planapalooza™, at the Rome City Auditorium, the Team will presented their findings so far, and discussed how community input had begun to shape the recommendations that will likely be in the updated Unified Land Development Code. The video recording of this presentation is linked below on this page.

Focus Meetings Discussion Forums

Focus Meetings were held on Saturday August 21st and Monday August 23rd both in person and online. These meetings covered Neighborhoods and Housing, Architecture and Design, Downtown Rome, Streets and Connectivity, and Land Use and development.

You can still provide your comments on these topics! Please visit the forums for topic details and to share your comments!

Mapping Workshop

Add your markers to the map to tell us what you love about Athens and what opportunities you think there are for improvement!.   Just zoom in to find a location you are looking for using the + sign at the bottom right corner of the map. Click, hold, and drag the marker of your choice and place it on the map to identify the following:

Be sure to tell us WHY you placed markers in each location using the comment field on the left. Feel free to also upload a photo/image to help explain your comment.

Repeat as many times as you’d like!

Note: If you have an idea about a neighborhood or a larger area, just put your marker near the area, and let us know in the comment.  If your idea isn’t location-specific, you can still put it on the map, just note that it’s “Not Location-Specific.”

Here are some things to think about as you place your markers:

1. What are some places that would be appropriate for infill or redevelopment? (Red marker)

2. Are there any places that would be appropriate for additional housing?  What kinds of housing? (Blue or red marker)

3. Are there any places that should be protected from development or redevelopment? (Green or yellow marker)

4. What are your favorite places to gather with friends, family and other community members? (Green or yellow marker)

5. Where should additional parks, playgrounds, plazas, squares, trails and greenways be located? (Blue marker)

6. What are some of the best streets for walking and/or biking? (Green marker)

7. Which roads feel uncomfortable and could use improvements to make them feel more safe and comfortable for walking/biking? (Blue or red marker)

8. What parts of the community are experiencing inequity? How could they become more equitable? (Blue or red marker)

Bonus points!

Try placing a yellow marker somewhere else in the world – is there an example of something you’ve seen elsewhere that could work in Spartanburg?  A great park or playground?  Your favorite street?  A beautiful building?  See if you can find it on the map, and if you can, include a photo!
